It's important to start by saying what the Grief Recovery Method isn’t:

  • It’s not counselling

  • It’s not therapy

  • It’s not an alternative treatment

Whilst all of the above can benefit you, they will not give you the tools and skills that will lead to the completion of all the things left unresolved when you have a loss. The Grief Recovery Method programme will give you the practical help you need.

Grief is defined as the “conflicting emotions that follow the ending or change in familiar patterns of behaviour.” This complex emotional state has nothing to do with how intelligent we are, and therefore we cannot rationalise it. Treatments that appeal to our head, and not our heart are not going to deal with the issue.

Grief is not about death, it's about loss. Because of this you can be grief stricken for many reasons. The Grief Recovery Programme gives you the tools to manage any loss.  It isn't about forgetting, it's about letting go of the pain.

So if Grief is normal why recover?

Although grief is a totally normal and natural emotion most of what we learn about it as we grow up and from society is intellectual. But you can't fix a feeling with a rational argument and yet we all do it.  How many times have we said, or indeed heard 'Don't be upset, they aren't suffering anymore'. The second part is factually true. But it is emotionally empty.

John James the co-founder of the Grief Recovery method identified 6 myths. Over the years these have been shown to be almost wholly universal.

The 6 Myths

  • Time heals all wounds

  • Replace the loss

  • Grieve alone

  • Be strong

  • Don’t feel bad

  • Keep busy

The idea that time heals is particularly unhelpful. How long are you supposed to wait without taking any actions. The Grief Recovery method teaches the actions to take so you can stop waiting.

Whether you are a parent, a teacher or otherwise involved with children you will know that sinking feeling when questions are asked about sad and painful feelings. Often we are left struggling for the right words, not least because we ourselves don't know what to do either.

Whether the child in your care has been bereaved, is about to face bereavement or they have experienced other significant emotional losses following divorce, house moves, changing school, being adopted, fostered, bullied or a myriad of other losses having the correct information at your fingertips can make a significant difference to their progress and well being.

This programme, for adults, will teach you how to communicate with the children in your care about losses they have experienced and those they yet might face. The course is run over 4 weeks and includes the Helping Children Grieve handbook and a certificate of completion. With agreement of your employer this counts for 8 hours of CPD.

Cost £200 for a 4 week course.
